- The Greek term metropolis literally means "mother city". The metropolis would be the urban centre of culture, commerce and industry, where a group of officials took control of various functions throughout the city. For example, organising bodies of settlers and conducting rituals of divination.


Panhellenism is the concept that all the similarities between the Greek poleis was more important than the differences. Panhellenic poleis were united and celebrated things like games and festivals together, where all Greeks were invited. In some circumstances, there was ensured safety so that panhellenic cities were places of peace between Greeks.
